About
William J. Hicks II, MD (“B.J.”), a neurologist specializing in vascular neurology. As a vascular neurologist, Dr. Hicks specializes in conditions of the cerebrovascular system, including ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. His main areas of interest include rapid access to acute stroke rescue therapies and clinical trials. Dr. Hicks serves as the Co-Director of the Riverside Methodist Hospital Comprehensive Stroke Center. He’s been a key leader for the OhioHealth StrokeNetwork, bringing stroke expertise to the bedside of roughly 30 Hospitals and Emergency Rooms throughout Ohio. In addition, his work as the OhioHealth Physician Lead of Columbus’ Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit has helped usher in a unique stroke treatment to the city. In light of these accolades during his nine years at Riverside Methodist Hospital, he will serve as President of the Medical Staff, effective 2022.
Dr. Hicks completed his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his neurology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where he served as Chief Resident and was recognized as Resident of the Year. Following his residency, Dr. Hicks completed a two Year NIH-funded vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Center at Houston.
When it comes to patient care, Dr. Hicks takes great pride in being the voice for his patients. Outside of acute stroke cases, he does not see time as an issue when it comes to getting to know his patients and their families on a personal level and speaking with them to provide further explanation and counseling following a potentially life-altering condition.
In addition to his clinical role at OhioHealth, Dr. Hicks is an active member in the central Ohio medical community. He currently serves as the immediate Past-President of the Columbus American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA), marking the first time a neurologist has served in this role for the organization. Recently he was named the President-Elect of the Board of Directors for the Great Rivers Affiliate of the AHA/ASA, one of their seven regional boards in the United States. Dr. Hicks also enjoys participating in clinical research and volunteering for health- and wellness-related public service. As a result of his work, he’s been awarded Columbus Business Firsts’ “40 Under 40”, along with the inaugural class of Columbus CEO’s “Future 50”.
Outside of work, Dr. Hicks enjoys spending time with his wife, two children, and German shepherd, Slice.
